Budget: £120,000
Date: 2009
The transformation of two neglected central squares on a social housing estate in Tower Hamlets. Extensive consultation with the local community, and on site workshops with local children, enabled Green Dreams to successfully transform the existing bleak sites into welcoming, playful spaces for the entire community.
The introduction of new grass mounds and natural play elements such as boulders and bespoke timber benches allow children to use their imaginations and at the same time introduces valuable green space on an estate that is dominated by concrete and tarmac. Play equipment was carefully chosen to appeal to a wide range of ages and abilities, the majority of the equipment is inclusive but also offers challenge to older children.
During consultation residents expressed interest in growing which led to an informal orchard being planted. Funding was secured enabling Green Dreams to hold workshops with local people to ensure ongoing community involvement in the maintenance of the orchard. The introduction of growing space and fruit trees will continue across the estate as funding becomes available.
